This is the full and definitive history of these vessels that one time were to be seen trading in their hundreds, not only on the Mersey, but also along the adjacent coastline and neighbouring inland waterways. The flats were the principal carriers, under sail along for generations, until supplemented and finally taken over by steam power and then the diesel engine. Many archive black & white photos and drawings by Edward Paget-Tomlinson are included.
