Mike Webb, who died in 2012, left a superb legacy – an amazing collection of photographs taken during the last years of significant commercial carrying on England’s canals. Most photos were taken in the 1960s, with some in the next ten years or so. Some of Mike’s photos were included in two booklets over 30 years ago, Shroppie Boats and Braunston’s Boats, but few have been published elsewhere. This new book brings together over 150 of Mike’s wonderfully evocative photos, many in colour – selected by Mike’s widow María, and narrow boat historian Pete Harrison, who also wrote the captions. The photos are presented in four sections:- Braunston area of the Grand Union Canal, the Shroppie, northern Trent & Mersey and western Bridgewater Canals (including Anderton Lift), and the BCN, under the name Brummagem Boats (a book of this name was planned, but never published).
The book has been sponsored by Braunston Marina, and is being launched there on 25 November – many boaters from the 1960s are attending. The book is published by CanalBookShop, based at Audlem Mill by the Shropshire Union Canal. It is their fourteenth canal title. CanalBookShop has built a strong reputation for specialist canal books, with its portfolio based mainly on the historical aspects.
