Welcome to IWA North Staffordshire & South Cheshire Branch
The Branch covers the Trent & Mersey Canal from Middlewich to Sandon, the Macclesfield Canal from Kidsgrove to the top of Bosley Locks, and the whole of the Caldon and Uttoxeter Canals. Our branch was previously known as Stoke-on-Trent Branch.
We are a very active branch and in this section we would like to give an overview of what we do. You will find out more about us and what we do in the panel on the left. To the right, some of our major campaigns are summarised.
We are very active in many areas, including campaigning, fund-raising and political lobbying, and we were very proud that these efforts were recognised at the 2009 IWA National AGM when, as the Stoke-on-Trent Branch, we were were presented with the Branch Achievement Award.
As well as working hard, we have a very active social calendar. Talks with guest speakers are held on a monthly basis from October to May at Stoke-on-Trent Boat Club, at which both members and non-members are very welcome. In the warmer months you will find us at many local events, including Etruria Canals Festival and Stone Food & Drink Festival. If you would like to volunteer to help on the stand at one of these events, you will be made very welcome. We have a number of Branch members who regularly turn up at these events but can always find room for more!
Details of all these will appear on the Events section, below.
There are many events within the Branch each year.
Amongst these are monthly social meetings which run from the autumn through to the spring on the second Friday of the month.
The branch also holds three monthly work parties each month, on the Cheshire Locks, at Bridge 70 on the Uttoxeter Canal and at Burslem Port, so wherever you live in the branch area there is likely to be a work party somewhere near you.
We look forward to seeing you.
|If you are interested in what we do, please join us! We are always looking for Branch Members to assist at events and with our campaigns or other activities. You can email us firstname.lastname@example.org|
|If you are not yet a Branch Member then join the Association!|
The image above of one of the paired Cheshire Locks illustrates one of our current active projects. We are working with the Trent & Mersey Canal Society and Canal and River Trust to improve and restore the locks themselves and to make the whole area more enjoyable and informative for all visitors. Find out more at the
Cheshire Locks website.
Working again with the Trent & Mersey Canal Society we are campaigning to re-open the Burslem Branch Canal, within the City of Stoke-on-Trent. This 3/8 mile canal is seen as a catalyst for regeneration of the Middleport area of the City. Historic features of the canal, which closed in 1961 following a breach, can still be seen and a recent project to uncover the line of the canal has revealed more details than have been seen for many years. Find out more at the
Burslem Port Project website.
