Volunteers' Week

Volunteers' Week takes place annually at the beginning of June, to celebrate the fantastic contribution volunteers make across the UK.  As a volunteer-led charity, IWA relies on the enthusiasm and support of members and volunteers who help protect and restore our wonderful waterways.

Volunteers' Week 2019

We are incredibly thankful for the support of hundreds of volunteers across the country who organise campaigns, lobby government, rebuild locks, dig canals, clear litter and vegetation from canals, paint, cook, organise meetings and events, plan festivals, write and edit content, design printed material, monitor planning applications, chair committees, raise funds, take on challenges, represented IWA and much more.

IWA volunteers come from all backgrounds, but the one thing they have in common is a love of waterways and a passion to restore them to their former glory. Without their time, commitment and passion many of Britain’s waterways would not be navigable today.

In 2018, IWA volunteers have given their time to:-

  • Cleanup the canals at over 363 volunteer days around the UK
  • Given over 7,000 hours to clearing vegetation and rubbish and restoring the canals
  • Over 400 WRG volunteers gave over 18,500 hours towards canal restoration.

Volunteers' Week 2019 - 'Wall of Thanks'. If there’s someone who you believe deserves a special thanks this year, please send us their name to post on IWA’s virtual ‘Wall of Thanks. Whatever the reason - we'd like to give them a name check on our 'Wall of Thanks'. Email:volunteer@waterways.org.uk - with the volunteers name and reason for thanks.
