Make a Duck Hat

This activity appeals to all ages and gives a real opportunity to talk to children about wildlife they might see on the waterways. Download the template and follow the instruction below to make a duck hat.

  • A4 Card (To print or draw the template on and then cut out)
  • Duck Hat Template, PDF 236KB (Print a few so the children can draw round the shapes and cut out or print one for each child to cut out directly)
  • Pencil
  • Colouring Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Decorations (Optional)

  1. Using the template, draw round the shapes onto a piece of card and cut out. Alternatively, print the template onto the card you wish to use and cut out. If the children are young or this activity is being held at a busy event it may be safer to have an adult do this in advance. Children should always be supervised when using scissors.
  2. Using glue, stick the wing to the front of the duck body.
  3. Decorate the duck with colouring pencils and your choice of decorations.
  4. Take the two strips of card and glue together at the ends, ends marked ONE should be glued together and the ends marked TWO should be glued together. Make sure the ends of the card strips overlap correctly to form a band that will fit the child's head.
  5. Attach the band to the back of the duck so it can be worn as a hat.
