Historical Information

A charter in 1197 first gave conservation rights for the Thames to the Mayor and Corporation of London.  The Port of London Authority has managed the tidal Thames since 1909.  There is an obelisk 230 yards (210 metres) below Teddington Lock showing the boundary of its responsibilities with the Environment Agency, which manages the non-tidal river.
