The River Avon (Warwickshire) is currently navigable from the Severn at Tewkesbury to Alvaston Weir, just upstream from Stratford-upon-Avon.
A Stratford and Warwick Waterway Trust was formed in 2004 from members of the then separate Upper and Lower Avon Navigation Trusts and other supporters, which proposed the extension of the river navigation to a junction with the Grand Union Canal at or near Warwick, a distance of 9 miles (14.5 km). The project has much support nationally, but is opposed by some local interests. The local authorities in the area, aware of the well-orchestrated opposition, remain reluctant to support the scheme at the present. The Stratford and Warwick Waterway Trust has now been absorbed into Avon Navigation Trust (which combined the Upper and Lower Avon Navigation Trusts) and no longer exists as a separate group.
