Photo: The lock at the northern end of Strabane Canal by Kenneth Allen
Local interest in restoration of the Strabane Canal in the 1990s led to support from Strabane District Council, and cross-border funding of Euros 1.3 million was gained to restore just over 1.5 miles of the Canal, including the Canal’s two locks. This was carried out by contractors during 2006 to 2007, but the work was to a poor standard, and the Council has refused to adopt and maintain the restored section of canal in its present state, and it has begun to deteriorate again.
