Ever wondered what’s lurking beneath the waters of the Birmingham Canal Navigations? The Cleanup weekend is a great opportunity to have fun and meet new people while clearing shopping trolleys, tyres, bicycles and even more exciting treasurers from the canal!
This year WRG volunteers will be working around Wednesfield on the Wyrley and Essington Canal.
Why is it important?
In 2017 more than 60 volunteers spent two days removing an estimated over 20 tonnes of rubbish from Wednesfield on the Wyrley and Essington Canal to Horseley fields Junction up to Wolverhampton locks and then down to the Bradley Arm upto the workshop. In some years this total has been closer to 50-60 tonnes! Lots of interesting ‘treasures’ were pulled out of the canal including bikes, an electric guitar, a gas barbecue, a mountain of tyres … and of course lots and lots of shopping trolleys! See photos.
WRG volunteers are supported each year by volunteers from The Inland Waterways Association, Birmingham Canal Navigations Society, Dudley Canal Trust, Coombeswood Canal Trust, Canal & River Trust, Friends of Tipton Cut and local residents.
It is hoped this annual effort on the BCN will help keep the less well used parts of the BCN & Black Country Network from getting choked up with rubbish and becoming impassable for boats!
