Essex Waterways - Camping

Coronavirus Covid-19 Update: The campsite reopened on 4th July.

There is a mown grass area suitable for camping alongside the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation at Hoe Mill, adjacent to the car park.  The site is a Camping and Caravanning Club Certificated Site, and we are able to accept up to five caravans, motorhomes or trailer-tents, as well as tents. Membership of the Club is required, but you can join at the site on arrival.

There is a small toilet block with wash basin and drinking water, but no showers.  There is an electric hook-up for each pitch, and the cost of use is included in the pitch fee.  This is a surprisingly quiet rural area for the South East, with plenty of good footpaths to explore the countryside, and the Navigation here is very popular amongst canoeists (licence required).  The village of Woodham Walter is just under one mile to the south and has three pubs (The Bell, The Cats and The Queen Victoria), and a church.  The small village of Ulting, to the north, has a picturesque church beside the Navigation.

The site is closed for the winter from November to just before Easter.

Caravan Access Warning:

If you are approaching Hoe Mill Campsite from the south, you will cross the Navigation over a bridge which has a three tonne weight restriction and 2 metre width restriction enforced by concrete barriers.  We recommend, therefore, that you always approach from the North via Ulting and Hatfield Peverel.  The turning into the gated drive for Hoe Mill Campsite is immediately before the traffic lights controlling access to the bridge, so you may wish to ring ahead from Hatfield Peverel to ensure the gate is open for you ready, otherwise you could block the road to oncoming traffic, while you wait for the gate to be unlocked.
