The All Party Parliamentary Group for the Waterways was reconstituted for the new Parliament on 25th February 2020.

Mission Statement

The Group's mission statement is “To consider matters relating to navigable (and formerly navigable) rivers, canals, estuaries and lakes in the UK; including the potential social, economic and cultural impact of the regeneration of those waterways and extension of the system.”

Most recent APPGW meeting

On 21st July 2020 a video meeting took place on the subject of Waterway Restoration - A Catalyst for Regeneration and Economic Recovery.  Addressing the Group were Peter Buck of Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust, John Dodwell of Montgomery Canal Partnership and Terry Cavender of Buckingham Canal Society, followed by a presentation from Simon Harrow of OFWAT.

14th May 2020 - impact of Covid-19 on the waterways

In May 2020 a meeting of the APPGW was convened to take place by video link to discuss the urgent issue of government support for waterway businesses impacted by Covid-19.  The meeting was attended by parliamentary members of the Group, representatives of waterway organisations and waterway businesses.  Addressing the Group were representatives of IWA, Broads Authority, British Marine and Canal & River Trust.  The action arising from the meeting was for a letter to be written to HM Treasury, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
