Silver Propeller Challenge - List of Locations

Visit our A-Z of waterways to find out more about each of these navigations, including boat dimensions and navigation authorities.

Places accessible to all craft kept on the connected inland waterways

  • Ashby Canal - Limit of Navigation beyond Snarestone Wharf
  • River Avon (Warwickshire) - Alveston Weir
(Safe limit of navigation for larger boats is at Avoncliffe near Tiddington, for shallower draughted boats just below Alveston Weir.  Either location accepted.  All boats must hold an Avon licence, and obtain guidance notes, in advance, from The Avon Navigation Trust)
  • Basingstoke Canal - King John’s Castle, Odiham
  • Birmingham Canal Navigations (Dudley No 1 Canal) - Southern portal of the Dudley Tunnel (above Park Head locks)
  • Birmingham Canal Navigations (Dudley No 2 Canal) - Coombeswood Basin
  • Birmingham Canal Navigations (Titford Canal) - Titford Pools
  • Birmingham Canal Navigations (Walsall Canal) - Walsall Town Basin
  • Birmingham Canal Navigations (Wednesbury Oak Loop) - Bradley, End of the Wednesday Oak Loop by Bradley Workshops
  • Black Sluice Navigation - Boston Black Sluice, Environment Agency
(Also accessible by trailable boats via EA slipway at Hubberts Bridge)
  • Caldon Canal - Leek Arm canal terminus
(Boats up to approx 13.7m (45ft) can turn at the end.  For longer boats the full length winding hole ¼ mile before is acceptable)
  • Caldon Canal - Uttoxeter Basin, Froghall
(Height restriction through Froghall Tunnel - the gauge below Flint Mill Lock errs on the pessimistic side - if you just clear the gauge you will have plenty of headroom in the tunnel. Winding hole before tunnel not full length but is an acceptable alternative location, as is winding hole above Flint Mill Lock for boats too tall for tunnel and too long for later winding hole.)
  • Cannock Extension Canal - Norton Canes
  • Chesterfield Canal - Cascade winding hole or limit of navigation ½ mile beyond
(Cascade winding hole is also known as Manor Road Winding Hole)
  • Erewash Canal - Langley Mill Basin
  • Gloucester & Sharpness Canal - Saul Junction
  • Grand Union Canal, Slough Arm - Slough Basin
  • Grand Union Canal, Wendover Arm - Current limit of navigation at Little Tring
  • River Great Ouse - Kempston Mill
(Location is the limit of navigation at Kempston Mill, or upstream of last island for deeper draughted boats)
  • Huddersfield Narrow Canal - Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre
(Passage through Standedge Tunnel must be booked in advance and is only available on certain days of the week in each direction)
  • Lancaster Canal - Tewitfield
(Access to the Lancaster Canal via the Ribble Link is tidal, must be booked in advance  and is subject to a planned timetable for passage in each direction)
  • Lee & Stort (Bow Back Rivers) - Carpenters Road Lock, Queen Elizabeth Park
(Passage through Carpenters Road Lock needs to be booked at least 7 days in advance)
  • Leeds & Liverpool Canal - Liverpool Docks
(Passage along the Liverpool Link needs to be booked at least 5 days in advance)
  • Leeds & Liverpool Canal - Springs Branch
(Turning at the end is restricted and boats longer than 10.7m (35ft) will need to reverse out.  Until the rockfall is removed, the location is Mill Bridge or the rockfall itself)
  • Little Ouse (Brandon Creek) - Brandon (or Stanton Downham Bridge for small unpowered craft), Environment Agency
Max length through Brandon Lock according to EA is 12.4m (40ft) but slightly longer narrow beam craft will be able to fit in diagonally. Below Brandon Lock acceptable for longer craft.
  • Maud Foster Drain - Maud Foster Windmill, Boston, Environment Agency
(Only navigable May-September. Boats up to 19.8m (65ft) can continue past the Mill and Packet Boat steps and turn around after the main A16 road bridge, where the wall finishes and the grass banks start. Larger boats can turn further down towards the tidal sluices)
  • Middle Level Navigations - Horseway Lock (or junction of Vermunden’s Drain and Sixteen Foot Drain)
(No winding hole at Horseway Lock)
  • Middle Level Navigations (New Dyke) - Holme
(Max length of craft through Lodes End Lock is 20.70m/68ft)
  • Montgomery Canal - Gronwen Bridge winding hole, Maesbury
  • Old Bedford River - Welches Dam Lock or Welney
(Access only available via Old Bedford Sluice, needs to be arranged in advance with EA)
  • Pocklington Canal - Melbourne Basin or Bielby
(Accessed via the tidal Ouse and River Derwent through Barmby Barrage)
  • Ripon Canal - Ripon Basin
  • Rochdale Canal - West Summit Lock
  • Sheffield & Tinsley Canal - Sheffield Basin (length restriction of 18.3m/60ft)
  • Shropshire Union Canal - River Dee Branch (lift bridge above the river lock; note that there is nowhere for longer boats to turn without going out onto the river, so reversing back up the two locks may be necessary.  The branch is shallow, especially on the right hand bend below the second lock down)
  • Sleaford Navigation - Cobblers Lock (or the winding hole above South Kyme for those unable to reach the limit of navigation), Sleaford Navigation Trust/Environment Agency
  • Stourbridge Canal - Fens Branch
  • River Foss - Wormalds Cut
(Book a passage through Castle Mills Lock)
  • River Thames - Inglesham, junction with the Thames & Severn Canal
  • River Weaver - Winsford Bridge

Places only accessible by local, portable and trailable craft
